The Style Contest

One of the great things that's happened over the past year is that Six Apart's three blogging platforms -- TypePad, Movable Type and LiveJournal -- have made significant strides in standardizing the layout and structure of the templates they use to produce blogs. Support for a single set of CSS declarations means that our designers can build a blog's look and feel and know that it can be applied across all three products.

But it's not just our designers that benefit. There's a community of third party designers who find work designing blogs on Six Apart's products, and three of them have organized The Style Contest for Movable Type, TypePad and LiveJournal. Sponsored by Six Apart, Adobe and StyleMaster, and judged by five well known designers, the contest features over $17,000 in prizes...and the opportunity for winning designs to be featured in Six Apart's products and used by potentially millions of bloggers.

There are less than three weeks left until the final submission deadline, so if you're a designer and know your way around TypePad's HTML and CSS structure, we encourage you to read the rules and submit your designs. And if you're looking for inspiration (either for the contest, or for your own blog), you can browse the current list of submissions.

I'll be posting more here about the winners when they're announced...including more about our plans for including Style Contest themes as part of TypePad's set of default themes.

He even has a Music TypeList

This one's a little silly, but we couldn't help but notice that TypePad got a clever mention in everyone's favorite satirical newspaper The Onion this week. "CIA Asks Bush To Discontinue Blog" shows the American President posting to his TypePad site. On an iMac, no less. While the actual address listed in the story isn't really used by Bush, (and isn't really used by the Onion, either) it's probably worth mentioning that any TypePad photo album can be password protected.

Even if it's not a matter of national security.

Using AdSense

Matt Haughey has written an essay about using AdSense with his TypePad weblog PVRblog. What started as a way to subsidize the costs of his TypePad account has turned into a pretty profitable pastime and Matt offers tips for those who want to create a weblog that will driver readers as well as high click-through rates.

Matt also points out some drawbacks of the AdSense program, namely the particularly arbitrary nature of the approval process -- Anil covered this on his own weblog recently.

TypePad Users Webring

Snowman, a TypePad user, has started a TypePad User Webring.

Want to easily add the webring graphic to your sidebar? Create a Link TypeList, call it "Webrings," and paste the graphic code either into the title field or in the notes field. If you choose to paste the code into the title field, be sure that you have removed all line breaks. If you paste into the notes field, be sure you have indicated that you wish to display notes as text in the TypeList configuration.

Remember to indicate that you want this TypeList included in your weblog!
