Making your TypePad site faster

You might have noticed by now that TypePad sites are running a lot faster. We were able to solve a technical problem that's been clogging up our network connection for some time, and it's made files on TypePad blogs load significantly faster.

You'll notice an improvement most on media files like images in photo albums or video files, but your regular web pages should load faster, too. Thanks for being patient while we got this all sorted out!

Domain mapping improvements

TypePad Plus and Pro users who have mapped a domain name (like www.example.com) to your TypePad sites should notice that now your web address will work without the www. prefix as well. That means your site's visitors can go to www.example.com or example.com to get to your weblogs and photo albums.

If you've used Pair to register your domain names, as described in Domain Mapping Made Easy, this change should already have taken effect. If you use a different domain registry, you can simply try out your site to see if it works, and then make any changes in the Control Panel, if necessary.

And, if you haven't tried out domain mapping yet, Plus and Pro users can give it a try. Instead of example.typepad.com, your address could be example.com, making your web address easier to remember and more personalized. To get started, just read over the domain mapping requirements.

Knowledge Base Update

We've done some housekeeping and rearranging with the TypePad Knowledge Base. You'll notice that the Help Tab has been updated--click through to your Control Panel > Help to see!

In the right column, you will find shortcut links to the Knowledge Base entries that used to be on the Help tab. These links point to the new Knowledge Base location at help.typepad.com. The existing entries have been updated, and new answers to frequently asked questions have been added.

You'll now also find links to the different sections of the User Manual on your Help tab and additional links for TypePad Support and Everything TypePad.

As always, support is high priority for us and these improvements should make it even easier to find any questions you may have.

TypePad vs. Comment Spammers

Recently we added some simple tests that eliminate a large amount of comment spam on TypePad blogs. According to our logs, most spammers try to cover their tracks by sending their posts through an "Open
Proxy Server". An Open Proxy Server is a misconfigured or infected machine that forwards web requests for anyone on the entire Internet. The spammers use these proxies to avoid the one commment-per-minute restriction and the Blog Owner's IP address blocking.

File Manager

TypePad subscribers will be happy to know that we've begun testing the TypePad file manager with a handful of TypePad members. We want to make sure that all the kinks are worked out before releasing it officially. We'll be increasing the numbers of testers based on members who have opened help tickets asking about the feature. Thanks again for your patience in waiting for this feature to be added.

Slew of new TypePad features added today

We're pleased to announce some exciting new features added to TypePad today. These have been added in response to requests that we've been frequently hearing from our members. You'll see from the list that we're extremely dedicated to providing resources to make learning TypePad easier, to learn about what's being developed and launched and to handle better management of comments. Finally, we've documented our Atom support so that developers can take advantage of the new API for publishing to TypePad weblogs, photo albums, and TypeLists.

Improved Comment Management

To make it easier to search, identify, and filter incoming comments to your weblog, we've improved TypePad's comment management, adding a "List Comments" screen that allows you to filter by author name, email address, IP address, and post. You can page through the comments 20 at a time, or you can view all of them on the same screen. And mass-deleting comments is as simple as filtering, clicking "Check All", then clicking the "Delete" button.

We've also improved the "Edit Comment" screen, making it easier to jump back to a filtered view of all of the comments matching a particular criteria. For example, if you receive a comment that you don't want, you can select all of the comments from that IP address by clicking one link from the "Edit Comment" screen, and delete them with one more click.

Quick Links to News and Support

The main application screen (members can click to view this screen) now contains a list of recent TypePad news (from TypePad Resources), along with a list of quick links to support resources.

We've also added an online user guide for TypePad, containing documentation on common tasks, how-tos, and tutorials.

Atom Implementation

In mid-December, we started publishing Atom feeds for all TypePad weblogs. Today, we've released beta support for the Atom API in TypePad, allowing developers to build tools--desktop clients, application plugins, etc--that you can use can post to your TypePad weblogs, photo
albums, and TypeLists.

There are a lot of interesting tools that can be built using Atom, and we hope to see them in the coming weeks and months. If you're interested, we've written more about our Atom support at the Six Apart company weblog.

Holiday Photo Albums

Did you receive a digital camera for Christmas this year? Did you take a lot of pictures during the holiday season? If so, we had you in mind when creating two new photo album themes.

We've specially created two new Holiday-themed styles for TypePad users to choose when customizing their photo albums. To apply the new Holiday styles to your photo album, simply click on the style link in "Design" and choose "Holly" or "Snowflake" from the style pull-down menu. Press save and your album will look something like this (with your own photos, of course):

TypePad Downtime

TypePad was unavailable for a period of time this morning due to unscheduled maintenance. All TypePad-powered sites were accessible, but logins and posting were disabled. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we're working to make sure it doesn't happen again.

More Privacy Features

This past week, we released a new version of TypePad with a couple of small new features, and a couple of improvements and fixes.

One of the new features is completely transparent to those of you with private weblogs or photo albums: your private pages are now marked as private, and Google and other search engines won't index them. We're doing this using the Robots Exclusion Protocol, which is a guide to (polite) search engine robots to tell them where they should and shouldn't go.

Based on the subscriber usage statistics from the preview release, we've increased the bandwidth allotments for the Plus and Pro levels.

Plus subscribers are now alloted 3 gigs/month (from the original 2) and Pro subscribers are now alloted 5 gigs/month (from the original 3).

Update on Domain Mapping

Just a heads-up for those interested in the domain mapping feature. We're still testing it out with a number of TypePad members who offered to beta-test and we're just working out some small glitches. We're hoping to get this publicly integrated into TypePad by the end of this week. We're always looking for more people to test, so if you're interested, please open a help ticket and we'll send you the information you need.

Two New Features Up-Close

Two new features that TypePad subscribers have requested and we have added in the latest version of TypePad:

1. The ability to display a list of your weblog categories in your sidebar. Use this so that users can click and view all posts associated with a particular category.

2. The ability display TypePad's recently updated weblog list in your sidebar. If you add this module, links to the 10 most recent weblogs that have been updated in the last 5 minutes will show up in your sidebar. While this is a great way to get to know your fellow TypePad users and community, be sure that before you add this module to your weblog, you're comfortable with allowing a random list of links to appear in your sidebar.

Features in Development

One of the main reasons for launching this official TypePad resources weblog was for us to have a place to communicate development news to our users. We believe that open communication is essential for a community to thrive and for TypePad to succeed. From the thousands of support questions we have answered, we know that our users have a lot of valuable ideas and suggestions to contribute and we really intend on listening to their feedback. So, we intend to keep all of you informed about what we're working on and what's going on.
