Photo Albums are Easy and Fun!

This post is the first in a series that introduces some great TypePad features and offers tips on finding help with TypePad in general.
Brenna on Photo Albums.
Q: What can you tell us about yourself?
Hi, I'm Brenna and I have been working in TypePad tech support since the beginning. I love working in support and with TypePad every day. Our tech team is fantastic and interacting with the blogging community is rewarding and always interesting.
I enjoy thinking of unique ways to use blogs, and introducing people to blogs. I also like creating layouts and styles for sites. Previous to working in TypePad, I spent most of my time at the Movable Type Community Forums. I hang out with my dog and husband and you can also find me at brenna.typepad.com.
Q: What tip will you be talking about today and why did you pick this?
I'm covering some different things you can do with adding photos to your Photo Albums and displaying pictures. TypePad has some cool alternatives with uploading images and not everyone is aware of the options available.
Q: What can I do with Photo Albums?
Photo Albums are a simple and stylish way to showcase sets of photos. Think of a Photo Album like roll of film... each album contains pictures that are alike. How do you organize your pictures on your computer? These same ideas can be used to organize, upload and display photos in your TypePad Photo Albums.
What's so great about TypePad is how you can add photos to Albums a handful of different ways. Photo Albums are available in all subscription levels of TypePad - Basic, Plus and Pro. Here is a great example of a holiday album to give you ideas for your own albums. This post shares how easy it is to display your pictures, and you can use albums for all types of photos!
If you have not created a Photo Album yet, you can do so on your Photo Albums tab: enter the Album name (what you would like to call the Album, "Trip to Alaska" for example), and the Folder name will be filled in automatically for you. Choose whether you would like the Album to be public or not and hit the Save button.
There are different options for uploading, it just depends on what you prefer to use. The first method below is great if you're getting started. When you have many photos or upload photos regularly, you'll find that the alternatives are a big help too:
- Uploading one or a few photos - To quickly add a single photo or a small group of photos, use the Add New Photos link on your Photo Albums tab. See Adding Photos to Your Photo Album for expanded details.
- Uploading using Windows XP File Explorer - This works for single photos too, but if you use Windows XP and have a handful of images it is especially handy. TypePad's Photo Publishing Wizard for Windows XP lets you upload multiple photos in a snap directly from Windows. See Uploading Files from Windows XP File Explorer.
- Uploading using PhotoToTypePad (Mac) - If you're on a Mac, there is an iPhoto plugin that enables you to export your photos directly to a TypePad photo album. See Third-party Photo Upload Tools for Macs.
- Uploading Zip Files - You can wrap multiple photos into a package on your computer and upload them to TypePad as a single file. TypePad will process the pictures and automatically create the display pages for the photos. See Uploading Multiple Images Using Zip Files.
- Sending Via Email - Or send your photo via email. You can configure your settings for that feature in Control Panel > Profile > Mobile Settings. We have more info here: Configuring Your Mobile Settings
- Cloning Photos - Once photos are uploaded to an album, you can easily copy them to another Album by Cloning Photos.
TypePad has professional styles to show off your images, including colors to match your weblog. There are seasonal styles for showing off your holiday pictures, too! To view the styles, click the Edit Design link for the Photo Album that you would like customize, and click the Style link to enter the Style setup area. When you have selected the style you would like to use, click the Save Changes button to apply the new style to your album.
After your Photo Album is ready to go, let your visitors know about your pictures by adding the Album to the sidebar links on your weblog. You can display all Albums or pick and choose which you would like to feature, and the most recent photo from the Album is displayed in your sidebar as the highlight picture. You can find more information on displaying albums at Displaying Albums on Your Weblog.
I hope you've learned something new from my post whether you're new to Photo Albums or a pro. And, should you choose to make your album public, you may even see your Photo Album on TypePad's main page!
