I don't have much relevant input on what Tim wrote except that

    1) I as a developer would use a command line search CONSTANTLY.
    2) And also this:

I have to strongly agree. It's always going to be much easier to make
a perl developer and MT developer than it is a
PHP/Ruby/insert_your_language developer. And there's no better way to
attract a perl developer and make them more comfortable than embracing
CPAN. I do appreciate that extlib is a whole lotta CPAN (and some
important MT functionality, most notably CGI and Data::ObjectDriver)
but when we're talking about doing a major restructuring of section of
MT code I'd like to see CPAN considered before the "reinvent the
wheel" option.

Now, here's the thing. Perhaps all of these things WERE considered
before rewriting it. Brad, Fumiaki and all of the other developers on
the MT team are scary smart. There's a very good chance that there's
a very good reason behind these moves. Fumiaki has written at length
about his rational behind the implementation he chose (thank you
Fumiaki! I'm still digesting it) but not so much about alternatives
that he did not.

Perhaps more explanation is needed before we jump to conclusions?
