I agree completely that for Debian packages, where you have access to  
debconf and, more importantly, suggested packages (rather than hard  
requirements) what you're suggesting makes perfect sense.

Those of us stuck in the RPM world, however, have to work with the  
tools at hand. Without the ability to query the user at install time  
(RPM punted on solving that problem, and purposely makes it rather  
difficult), and only hard & fast required packages, the RPM model  
generally handles it with sub-packages and package provides.

I'm not suggesting that we break up the MTOS project, just that the  
RPM specfile might end up building more packages than the Debian  
control file.
