[MTOS-dev] RSS Support

I should point out that iTunes reads Atom as well.

Also, this is *not* yet another conversation about the relative merits of either format -- to tell you the truth, we don't care, for the most part, as long as something works. This is about optimization, both for performance and simplicity.

This is a religious matter where I and others wholeheartedly disagree with you.

I actually had this queued up for a blog post last week and still
haven't gotten around to it. It's something that has come up before:

http://appnel.com/2006/06/one-syndication-format

Essentially any feed reader worth anything (with iTunes being the only
notable exception here) reads Atom that its really doesn't matter.

So I think having multiple feeds complicates things more. I also think
that RSS, as popular as it is, is inherently flawed. These notes from
a presentation Tim Bray made detail some of them:
http://www.windley.com/archives/2006/03/tim_bray_on_ato.shtml. These
flaws are know to impact the user experience and there is not feasible
fix for them: http://37signals.com/svn/archives2/safari_rss_posts_leave_me_hanging.php

Feed utilization will never move forward with it. Atom on the other
hand is an IETF standard, tied to a superior publishing protocol and
now has the support going forward of companies ranging from Google to
Microsoft. To me its just a matter of time and think that companies
like Six Apart leading that is what will lead to this necessary
tipping point.
