I continue to agree with you though I don't think requiring a user to
install and run Java software is an acceptable solution. I'm sure
there are some who would like to have this option (I assume you are
one), but there are many who do not.

This bring me back to what I was getting at with XSearch. One search
engine does not fit all. Some users would like Lucene. Others
KinoSearch. Others Google. You may need one search for posts and
another for tags or geosearching or browsing some external data source
via your MT weblog templates look and feel.
