For the record, there are other interfaces to sphinx than MySQL. 
Specifically the docs mention PostgreSQL and XML file interfaces.

We just haven't tried out the PostgreSQL version and haven't implemented 
the XML file interface as (for us at least) there hasn't been a need yet.

And this coming from the guy that was probably the only MT with 
PostgreSQL user for quite a while. :)
