License Prices
Question
Is the price listed for a license a one-time fee, or is there a recurring or renewal fee after a certain period of time?
Answer
The price is a one-time payment for that license and for that release version of Movable Type. Updates within the same release version number are free while you hold the license; upgrades can be purchased at a discounted cost1.
An "Update" of the product is defined as that which adds minor functionality enhancements or any bug fix to the current version. This class of release is identified by the change of the revision to the right of the decimal point, i.e. X.1 to X.2
An "Upgrade" is a major release of the product and is defined as that which incorporates a major new features or enhancement that increase the core functionality of the software. This class of release is identified by the change of the revision to the left of the decimal point, i.e. 4.X to 5.X
So, if you purchase a license when 3.2 is the currently available release, then a 3.3 or 3.5 release would be a free upgrade for you; but a 4.0 release would require the payment of an upgrade fee to obtain a new license comparable to your current 3.2 license.
(Please note that the upgrades referred to in this article are different from the License Upgrades available to increase your number of users, although both of them do involve a discount on the new license.)
