Creating a New Weblog
Question
How do I add a new weblog in Movable Type?
Answer
Assuming you have the necessary permissions to create weblogs in the system:
- Determine the location for your new weblog and create the folder for it on your server, using FTP or a File Manager provided by your host. If your server is not running under cgiwrap or suexec, remember to set the permissions on the new folder to the UNIX equivalent of
777.Tip: It may not always be necessary for you to create the weblog folder yourself: in version 3.21, Movable Type will try to create the folder for you when you enter the values on the New Weblog Settings screen. If it cannot create the folder, you'll see a message to that effect when you save those settings, in which case, you will need to create the folder yourself and set proper permissions on it.
- Log in to your Movable Type installation, and select Weblogs from the System Shortcuts2 menu. Click the Create New Weblog link above the Weblogs listing. The New Weblog Settings screen will appear.
- Enter the appropriate values in the fields presented for the new weblog.
Tip: If you are unsure about the value to use for Site Root3, use the setting from a existing blog in your installation as a guideline.
For example, if the existing blog uses a Site Root of:
/home/melody/public_html/blogand you have created a folder named "newblog" in your public_html folder, you should use:
/home/melody/public_html/newblogas the Site Root for the blog you are now creating.
- Save the changes.
- Rebuild Site, and then click the View Site link.
- If you get an error message when rebuilding, or your site cannot be viewed, check your paths again in Settings. Save any modifications and rebuild the site again.
You can now begin customizing the preferences and templates for your new weblog.
1 In versions prior to 3.2, Movable Type does not try to create a weblog folder at all, so you must always create it yourself and assign the proper permissions.
2 In versions prior to 3.2, choose Create New Weblog from the Shortcuts menu when you first log in.
3 In versions prior to 3.2, this setting is named Local Site Path; and you will also need to specify a Local Archive Path as well.
