404 on View Site

Question

When clicking View Site from within Movable Type, I get a 404 Not Found error.

Answer

  • Have you created and saved a new entry with a status of Published (rather than Unpublished); or used the REBUILD SITE option to generate your weblog files?

  • Is your Main Index Template set to rebuild automatically? Make sure the option for "Rebuild this template automatically when rebuilding index templates" is checked on the Edit Template screen.

  • Do you get any errors when publishing an entry or rebuilding your site? If so, resolve the errors to ensure Movable Type can complete the rebuilds required to generate your files.

  • Does your Site Root in Settings > Publishing correspond to the Site URL2?

  • Is Movable Type publishing files to the Site Path? You can check this by logging into your server account via FTP and browsing to the folder you've specified. If files are not being published to the location you're expecting, and you're not getting any errors on rebuilds, then the Path is probably not correct. See How can I find my full server path? to determine the correct path to use.

1 In versions prior to 3.2, make sure that your entries are set to a status of PUBLISH and not DRAFT.

2 In versions prior to 3.2, navigate to Weblog Configuration > Core Setup and look for Local Site Path and Local Site URL.
