Invalid Login

Question

I'm getting an Invalid Login message when trying to sign in to Movable Type.

Answer

First Login?

  • Is this your first login attempt after installing Movable Type? If so, did the installation script run successfully? Until it reports success, you will not be able to log in.
  • Are you entering the default username (Melody) and password (Nelson) correctly? These are case sensitive.

Changed Hosts or Servers?

Are you trying to log in after moving servers, and you are using the Berkeley database? Do you also get a No entry_id error when trying to post a comment on your weblog?

When you change hosting providers (or just move to a different server at the same provider), it is possible that the two servers have different versions of the Berkeley DB library; this is the library that Movable Type uses to store your data. When you copy the DB files from one host to another, if the two hosts have different versions of Berkeley DB, the new host will not be able to read the files from the old host.

This can be fixed by converting the DB files over to the format used by the new library version; please review the Knowledge Base article on Converting Berkeley DB Files To New Version for more information.

After Upgrading?

Are you trying to log in after upgrading? Did the upgrade script run successfully? Unless the upgrade script completed without errors, you may not be able to log in.

Changed Username Or Password?

Are you trying to log in after changing your username or password? The original cookie may still be in use. Try deleting cookies before another login attempt.

If your browser uses any type of "auto-save" feature for passwords, it may still be retaining old information, so check for this possibility as well.

General Suggestions

Try deleting cookies.

Try MT Medic. If MT-Medic doesn't find any authors, this could be a sign of database corruption, or a change on the server as described in the previously mentioned section of the Troubleshooting manual.

Important: Due to changes in how permissions are handled in version 3.2, it is likely that MT-Medic will not function with that version.
