Author Has No Permissions
Question
I created a new author name for myself and deleted Melody. Now I have no permissions.
Answer
Note: The information in this article applies only to versions below 3.2.
One of the reasons the installation instructions tell you to change Melody's information to your own (rather than deleting her) is that her author name is granted full permissions upon creation. By changing her information to yours, you will have all of those same permissions by default.
Newly created authors do not have all the available permissions upon creation, so if you failed to grant these to your new author name, and have deleted Melody, you've effectively denied yourself full access to your own installation.
- If you're just getting started with the installation, the quickest way to resolve this problem is to delete your database files (or drop the tables in the database if you are using SQL), and run
mt-load.cgiagain to restore Melody back into the system (along with all the other default settings for a new installation). This time, when you log in as Melody, immediately click Edit your profile, then change the author name and password there to your own.
- If you've already started working in the system and have information you don't wish to lose, you can try the third-party script MT Medic, which offers the ability to edit an author's permissions outside of Movable Type.
If you're using a SQL database and are comfortable editing it directly, you could also try updating the author permissions that way.
(Please note that support staff cannot provide assistance with either MT Medic or making direct edits to your database.)
