Install
MT-Medic. It should let you solve your problems.

I am having exactly the same problem, right down to the "No such author" message on trying the hint for "Forgot Your Password?" Is something going on the rest of us should know about? I had not changed anything on our site before this happened--everything was working fine for a couple of months before last night. Now, none of our site's user IDs are working! If any Movable Type gurus are monitoring this thread, please speak (write) up.

P.S. To make matters worse, I'm a relatively new webmaster, having inherited this site, so any solutions will probably need spoon-feeding (assume I know nothing, and you'll be close to correct).

Fred -
did your server do any upgrades since the last time you logged in? did you try MT-Medic (see mcroft's post above)?

Argh, we haven't been able to log in for weeks! Even mt-medic isn't working for me on this one!! When I click on Configuration, it says, "You cannot log in to MT-Medic untill you have specified the $ADMIN_PASSWORD or $INFO_PASSWORD in the configuration section of the /home/gloria/www/cgi-bin/MT/mt-medic.cgi file."
Help!!!!!!!

I've changed the ADMIN_PASSWORD line, uploaded mt-medic, etc. But my server won't let me run it.
I've also done a CHMOD, and made sure that I uploaded it in ASCII form. No go.
Any ideas? I've not been able to login to my blog since the blackout here in NY.

Can you run mt-check?
If you're running MySQL can you run
Check Tables?

I'm not able to run mt-check either. It's there though.
I'm not running MySQL.

I figured it out -- just had to change the Perl path in the scripts -- duh!

I'm having the same problem as everybody here. I have run mt-medic, but it is not showing me any authors or blogs. I went into the database and looked at the author db and it appears that the i.d.s are at the bottom of the file. Is the author db corrupt? Any ideas?

I have the same problem....
My ISP upgraded their servers forcing me to change from Berkeley db to mySQL db. Because DB_File.pm can no longer be found I am unable to convert my existing blogs using the mt-db2sql.cgi script...but that's another issue (suggestions welcome).
Having come to a dead end on the conversion, I decided I'd just start again, so at least I'd be able to write some new blogs...but no, it appears I no longer have any authors!
I cannot log into MT because of the lack of authors. I have run mt-medic.cgi as suggested above and it just confirms that I have no authors but doesn't allow me to create any!
How do I set up an author if I cannot log in? I have tried all my old ones and even tried the default (Melody/Nelson) login that I used when first installing MT but no luck.
Please help!
Emma.

I am unaware of any upgrades that may have happened with my server, but I am getting the same errors - there are no authors that still exist, there are not even any blogs that I created (I had four, previous to whatever happened.)
I ran mt-medic and it only confirmed that I am lacking authors, but it did not allow me to create new ones.
Did my author DBs get hosed?
When I checked my db file, I found that there were duplicates of nearly all the files, with an added extension of .lock. Any ideas what THAT is about?
Thanks in advance.

I've got the same problem. It worked on August 30th, but won't now. I'm (hosted? supported? served?) by warped, and they have done upgrades, but I have no idea what I have to change to be able to get it to work. I'm so frustrated and just want to update my journal, but I had to get help to even get it up on my site. I don't know what to do. Agh!

Okay. I can run mt-check.cgi and everything is fine.
I looked at the authors.db file in my databases folder, and the authors are there but it's mostly gibberish and I'm not sure what it's supposed to look like normally, but all the information is there.
Any ideas, anybody?

I have the same problem.
I installed MT-Medic too, but it indicates that there is no authors and blogs.
I think someone should report this problem to Six Apart. It's a serious problem.

I moved my movable type installation from one server to another recently, and now I'm not able to log in.
MT Medic isn't helping; it doesn't show any authors or any blogs.
At first I thought it was a permissions problem on the .db files, but they're now identical to what I had on the old server. I've updated my .cfg file to point to the new directories, etc. I've used MT Medic to compare the configuration of this installation with another installation of MT that I have on the same server (in a different directory, for a different site), and all the settings are virtually identical.
Does anyone know where to go from here?

Did anyone read
I changed hosts and now I can't login to Movable Type in the Troubleshooting section of the manual? (You don't have to literally change hosts to have the same problem.)
Hochan - it's a serious problem that has to do with something on your server's end in re: the database (Berkeley is notorious for this problem and its overall instability) - which means there's little Six Apart can do about it - other than offer the other database options as they've done.

Yes, I finally found that section in the manual, after poking around on some other discussion threads and finding a reference to it. It definitely solved my problem. Took about an hour to update all my dbs, but now I can log in. Thanks!

I ended up contacting my webhost (phpwebhosting.com) and asked them if they had changed anything in the database systems, and they fixed it.
So there's that, too.

I have been working on this same issue for a very long time- and come short of reinstalling everything, but that may be what i have to do.
one day (this summer)- i could not login. no such author. talked to my web host. no straight answer. tried mt-medic, just confirmed that i had no authors.
like everyone else, i haven't changed anything. i suppose it is my host server- but what should i specifically ask them to do to fix the problem? their response is that if it's a login problem , then its a scripting thing. Ahh!
anyone found a solution to this?

Unfortunately, the only solution I've found, after not being able to post anything for a whole month, was to reinstall a fresh version of MT.
It hasn't been quite as much of a pain as I expected since I was able to recreate my templates quite quickly by using the code in my old static files. Would have been even easier if I'd thought to export a backup of my entries before it all went wrong, but such is life!
The most annoying thing is that I now have separate 'old blog' and 'new blog' entries which don't cross reference but short of copying and pasting it all into the new installation, I'll just have to live with that.
