Movable Type 3.3 (Beta-2) released

Well, after a slightly longer testing period than we expected, we're excited to provide you with Movable Type 3.3 (Beta-2). This release features not only a number of fixes for bugs that you helped us find in Beta-1 but also three plugins we will be bundling with 3.3:

  • A new and improved StyleCatcher
  • WidgetManager
  • GoogleSearch

What's more, we've introduced, for the first time ever, a live view of our work through our external Subversion repository.

I'll be covering all four of these items and a number of improvements in this release and Beta-1 very shortly. In the meantime, check out the Beta-2 release notes to see what was changed.

As always, the following resources have been provided for your testing comfort and convenience:

Finally! Up to the minute code that might screw my installation over! :P

Heh. Totally. Not for the feint of heart. Definitely living on the edge, which some people really love.

In fact, three of those people (who have their sites pulling automatically from the repository at present time) are me, Brad Choate (lead MT developer) and Arvind Satyanarayan (of movalog fame) so if something breaks, not only are we going to know about it quickly, but we'll be fixing it just as quickly. I'm sure you can expect others...

Been playing around with the new plugins on MT3.3b2 - StyleCatcher works sweet (once I changed the permissions on the .cgi file) - really like the 'Powell Street' color scheme. The WidgetManager is amazing too - will be a great way to drop in sidebar plugins in the future too, like counters, blogstats, even weather reports (when a plugin exists for them), whatever. I found the Google plugin doesn't appear to save your API key at system level (if you wanted to use it as a default for all blogs on the installation I presume), only saves it at the weblog level - has this been reported yet? Not sure yet how it is included in a template though - haven't had much time to have a good play. Cheers.

Hey demonsurfer, I'm glad you're enjoying the beta. I agree that StyleCatcher and WidgetManager are awesome. They make life a lot easier in terms of managing the content and design of your site.

Re: The GoogleSearch plugin, please make sure to file any bugs you find. Reporting them here doesn't help us in fixing them and filing them yourself allows us to correspond with you through the bug system if we need more information, which, in this case, we almost certainly will.

Don't worry about whether something has been reported or not. if it's not on the known issues list, report it.

Hmmm mostly silence since b2. Are we getting that close to going golden?

Indeed we are. We've been working very hard on nailing down a number of small but important issues with Beta-2 and a few remaining pieces of functionality. Very soon, we hope to have a Beta-3 and, hopefully, final release candidate for you all.

Morning Jay. Just to clarify, BigPAPI (or at least its functionality) will effectively be inbuilt or packaged with MT3.3, is that be correct?

"is that be correct" ..wtf? nice grammar.. *rolls eyes*

BigPAPI functionality has been folded into the core with an extra developer-facing feature in the form of Transformer plugin callbacks. BigPAPI plugins need to be updated in order to work correctly with the new version and will be by launch.

Very kewl. Thanks - you people are doing a great job with MT.
