Why not MT 3.5? Or MT 4.0?
This is an archived entry from the Movable Type 3.2 beta test.
Entries from the current beta release (v3.3) can be found here.
As you all know, over the course of the last few weeks, the team and I have been really, really busy getting Movable Type 3.2 into shape. Part of that job, of course, includes reading feedback that you post on your blogs. Today I read something Dan wrote on danandsherree.com (or maybe here):
Given all the new features, I’m a little surprised that this release is being called 3.2—it could be 3.5 or maybe even 4.0!
This isn't the first time someone's said this, and we're pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm. But we've got a few good reasons.
From one vantage point, given all that has changed, it does seem odd to imagine that this major update to the software was only worth three tenths of a bump in version number. I can understand that. But is this release really Movable Type 4.0? No way...
Now I'm not going to tell you that MT 4.0 is already spec'ed out. It's not. However, we think we know generally what it looks like and how it's different from the blogging software and even general model of blogging you're used to today. MT 3.2 is a big evolutionary jump. We'll save a major version change for when it's revolutionary.
So why not 3.5? Well, honestly, we discussed the possibility early on but tossed it aside. This is a significant update in terms of usability, community management and installation-wide management, there's no doubt. But to get to 4.0, we have business to take care of and that includes several releases with much bigger features than what we've included in 3.2.
Jumping from 3.17 to 3.5 would mean we'd have to do an even larger jump in the next version. What's more, to shorten our runway like that would mean that we have to do more in fewer releases, which is counter to our desire to have a more rapid release cycle.
Finally, none of us are fans of the bad marketing practice of version number inflation. We'd rather you be delighted that such a small increment in version number packs such large features.
Anyway, we do appreciate the base sentiment in Dan's (and other's) post: 3.2 is an awesome update with great new features.
We agree!

Well, now this is interesting. I know my blog sent a ping successfully to this post. Yet, over 2 hours later and there is not a sign of my ping?

It's a new little feature in MT 3.2 called TrackBack moderation. I'm sure you'll see this a lot in the future.

If 3.2 is like THIS, I just can't imagine what MT users will have in 3.5, or 4.0. I think it is not only jumping, but flying. Thanks 6A!

This release is turning out to be what I'd hoped for with 3.0. I'm not saying this as a knock against Six Apart — quite the contrary. The work being put into 3.2 shows that whatever misgivings I had with the development cycle (post-3.0) were completely unfounded. This is a long-winded way of saying that my faith has been restored and that this release is definitely 4.0 material.

I'm already have a time finding my way round v. 3.1x :) Now if I could just decide how to juggle a few issues once 3.2 goes live and I switch, I'd be happy.
