Comments on the user manual

This is an archived entry from the Movable Type 3.2 beta test.
Entries from the current beta release (v3.3) can be found here.

We've activated comments on all pages of the Movable Type 3.2 user manual so feel free to leave us feedback on anything you see that we've missed, messed up or even did a great job on. We're also very interesed because you all, by definition, are the experts in Movable Type 3.2 and probably in Movable Type in general. If you have a great use for a particular tag or know a better way to do something we've covered, please comment!

All comments will be moderated and are goverened by the Six Apart Terms of Service which is linked to from the bottom of every comment form. If we find a comment informative or useful, we will either publish it or fold it back in to the docs (or both!). In this way, the user manual will grow organically into an even better resource for all Movable Type users.

We look forward to your feedback.

» New Movable Type User Manual! from Learning Movable Type Announcements
Halleluia, the dark ages are over. Six Apart has finally released a new User Manual for Movable Type. Written by gracious and brilliant Tim Appnel, an MT plugin developer (among other things), this documentation finally helps explain how to use... [Read More]

The contents of the manual are probably great, and I hope that the online presentation of it will improve with time. At the current time it feels like a square peg in a round hole. Text presented in a solution that wasn't designed for it.

  • The problems/solutions of the templates and layouts (and maybe others) are organized by solution title. Where can I browser through the list of questions?
  • Why are most of the appendices (A through E) not laid out as tables?
  • The default template used for laying out all of the pages just doesn't work. The main column is way too narrow and none of the code sections wrap lines. Since overflow gets hidden, the copy/paste code is unusable. (See Chapter 10.)

There are probably more things, I just can't bring myself to read the documentation.

Question: Would you prefer(do you care?) that multiple comments be broken out, so you can remove or address them atomically, or that they be bundled into a list in a single comment?

Atomic would be best, but we're happy as long as people are leaving useful comments.

The Plaid Cow, this is not the final design of the docs.

Jay, I just tried to leave two comments on the Manual blog, but received an error, Name and email address are required. It's showing me as signed in (and I was able to successfully comment here) - and there is not extra name or email address fields to enter. Or is this an issue with my profile for the username?

We're requiring email on the Manual blog, but there should be a part of the TypeKey login that prompts you whether to give that information to the blog owner of the blog you're commenting on. Are you not seeing that?

That's strange. Now it works. It didn't before. Thanks.

I'd like to give Six Apart a round of applause for its current efforts. Both this blog and the ability to comment on the manual are shining examples of the transparency now available to users of Movable Type. In addition to having the features I've clamored for for years, Movable Type 3.2 looks to be the most polished release yet; thanks Six Apart, and keep up the great work!

Thanks very much, Jonathan. The team has really put its heart, soul and a lot of hard work into this release and not only do we share your feelings as users about the final product, but it makes it even more special that you all appreciate what we've done.

We look forward to even better things in the future. This release was really about fit and finish and removing roadblocks that we all face as users. We really look forward to bringing you all that we have planned for the future.
