Gentle reminders for beta testers

This is an archived entry from the Movable Type 3.2 beta test.
Entries from the current beta release (v3.3) can be found here.

We realize that a large number of people have joined the ranks of the beta testers recently after announcements from ProNet and other places. I'd just like to point out for all of you newcomers a few requests we make of you.

Over on the left sidebar of every page there is a section called "Helpful links". Please read over each of those before downloading the beta or commenting on this blog.

The most important things are:

  • Back up your data before you upgrade
  • Always check the known issues list if you have any problem
  • If your issue isn't there but you're not absolutely sure that it's a bug, you can ask for help in the user-to-user beta test support thread and nowhere else (stray support requests will be deleted)
  • If you think what you have found is a bug, file it.

Thank you for your understanding and compliance with these few requests. It makes everyone's lives easier and saves the MT team's sanity.

Listen to these guys! I didn't, and I'm still recovering from the devastation!

Actually, I ended up making changes I'd been meaning to make for a while. I downloaded and installed without backing-up thinking I knew the risk, and I paid for my arrogance. Fortunately, MT was so easy to use, recovery was easy, and the slickness of the 3.2 interface made the task enjoyable.

And if you're completely neurotic, you can do what I did:

  1. Back up database using phpMyAdmin
  2. Export entries from old MT install
  3. Download entire Movable Type directory via FTP
  4. Download entire blog directory via FTP

Then and only then did I feel safe making the switch. :-)

Really great job guys, it's been a fun beta test. The new version of SpamLookup alone is worth diving in.

Will this version allow the backup, and thus the migration of Authors/Users ? I really need that. Thanks.

It depends on what you mean by backup, Kirk. Every version has supported export, but that was only of entries, comments and TrackBacks. Templates, configuration and such require full database export. That is not included in this release, but it's something I would love to provide in future releases.
