Beta test releases
This is an archived entry from the Movable Type 3.2 beta test.
Entries from the current beta release (v3.3) can be found here.
I know that you're itching to get your hands on the new version, but first I'd like to tell you about exactly what we will be producing. During the beta test, we will be distributing two types of releases:
- Versioned beta releases
- Nightly builds
You will find both of these over on the left sidebar of the beta blog. New versioned beta releases (3.2b1, 3.2b2, etc) will be provided every four or five days (although that may vary) and will include fixes for all bugs addressed during that period. These releases will have been tested by our QA team and represent the more stable release of the two.
Nightly builds, which will contain the date of release in their filename (e.g. 20050712), will be automatically pushed to the site after only a round of automated unit tests and represent the latest code changes (for better or worse) of any packaged release.
Which you choose depends entirely upon your situation. Most people will want to stick with the versioned betas as there is less of a chance for encountering problems. However, if you're very anxious to get your hands on the latest code (for example, if you're working on a bug with a developer) then you will want the latest nightly build.
By offering these two types of releases, we hope to satisfy both those who like on live on the edge as well as those who would rather have a more stable and loving software environment. Feel free to use whichever suits your needs best.
