Plugin Survey Results

One of the greatest strengths of Movable Type is its extensibility. It has an extensive plugin directory with hundreds of plugins that are in use by thousands and thousands of people. But which ones get installed and then used?

We are interested in the answer not just because we want to know what plugins are popular, but because as we begin planning the next major release of Movable Type, code named Athena, we believe the answer to this question provides incredible insight into how we can best improve the core product. If a plugin is so widely used by the community, and so many people recommend installing it, then why not just bundle it with the core platform?

To help us better understand what plugins are in wide use by our developer and user communities, we devised a quick and simple survey to help answer that question. In that survey we asked three simple questions:

  1. What plugins do you have installed?
  2. What plugins do you think should be folded into the core to Movable Type?
  3. If you were only allowed to install one plugin, which one would it be?

The results were both interesting and surprising...

Multiblog and MT Blogroll should certainly be rolled into MT proper.

The results are really quite interesting and in parts unexpected to me (not that I'd want to claim any importance for myself).

Answer 3 is showing the need to fight spam pretty clearly (rel=nofollow is a failure, admit it and don't use it...)

Replying "Plugin Manager" on #2 would seem like a logical choice, as it would basically mean Movable Type comes with "all" plugins, or at least they're just a click away.

What surprises me is the relatively bad scoring of Textile2 -- do people in search for an easier way to input their posts just find Markdown first because it comes alphabetically first, and stick with it?

Pagination is a core standard in basically every Web App. Just Movable Type needs a plugin... unfortunately I don't have PHP, so I can't use it myself.

From Marco van Meegen. Checkclipse in-tegrates the Checkstyle style checker for Java Coding Guidelines into Eclipse. While you develop, style violations are marked in the Workbench by warning markers and task entries. Checkclipse features

it's too hard to use it myself, and there's no multiblog in MTpro.
