Style Contest Designer: Victoria Wang
This post is the third in a series of interviews with the winners of The Style Contest. Check back every week to meet a new Style Contest design winner. Today we're speaking with Victoria Wang, whose Summer Love theme won in the "Home and Family" category.
Q: What is your design background, and how did you get into design?
I was always into art, but I didn’t know much about design until about two years ago when I started working in web development for a non-profit Christian organization. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and experience in content-oriented web design there.
Q: Tell us about your approach to the design of your winning style.
I was in a good mood and I felt like doing something related to summer :-D. After I drew some sketches and thought up a color scheme, I put things together in Photoshop and coded in Scite.
Q: What kind of response have you received from people who are using your style?
Positive I guess :-). What’s more interesting to me, though, was discovering a couple people who had modified my design. Nothing’s as fascinating as seeing a reinterpretation of your own idea like that.
Q: What has been your experience designing styles for TypePad, Movable Type, or LiveJournal?
Great. The XHTML in Six Apart’s blog system is nicely structured.
Q: Tell us about your current design work and projects.
Besides doing web design at my job which I mentioned earlier, I’m working on some small miscellaneous web design projects on the side.
Q: Where do you find design inspiration? Who are some of the designers that inspire you?
I’m very easily inspired so honestly, it comes from anywhere or anyone.
Q: Do you have any advice for other style designers?
Don’t be attached to your designs in their first iteration. Make several different versions, each with massive changes, and you’ll end up with something much better than your first try.
