Life Recording

Over at CNN.com, they're running an interview with me about weblogging, the web and where I see the industry going: Pundits and knitters find common ground in Weblogs.

When Ben read the interview, he commented that it was a sort of "stream of consciousness" piece. Some may think that he meant to say "hey, you're rambling." What *I* think he meant to say is "hey, your passion for weblogging really comes out in this piece!"

I find that when I do these sort of weblogging from 20,000 piece interviews, I tend to get extremely moved by what we're doing when we blog. And this isn't so much about tools or Six Apart -- it's about the fact that weblogging has lead to so many stronger friendships and relationships that have begun online.

I feel strongly about this part:

Being able to record your life is something that I can imagine everyone [doing]. [Everyone will] have terabyte after terabyte of all these instances of their lives. And certain information is going to be available to certain groups and other will be available only to like family and other stuff will be available only to you. So in 10 years, I can fully imagine every moment of my life is documented. And the privacy will be there to prevent it from being used in a malicious way. But that I think is the biggest thing. We're going into a recording of life.

While it's certainly ambitious endeavor, I strongly believe this is the future of weblogging. I said at the Supernova conference a couple months back that I would have loved to have a digital record of my past 27 years. I can easily imagine that when it comes time for us to start a family, this will be more of a reality.

The other interesting thing about the CNN piece is that it's just one aspect of the weblogging story. That's why I like the title that "Pundits and Knitters Find a Common Ground."

After all, it's all about communication.
