Plugin Contest Deadline Extended, Questions Answered

The Movable Type developer contest has been underway for a couple of weeks now, so we wanted to clarify a couple of points that we've been getting questions about. We've assembled a mini-FAQ below.

  • We're extending the deadline for submissions to the plugin contest to July 6, 2004 to make sure that we've given developers adequate time to develop plugins, particularly considering the licensing discussions that have taken place over the past couple of weeks.
  • If you've already submitted a contest entry, you can resubmit it; just let us know in the Description box on the form that this is an updated version of your submission.
  • We've put up some information on the judges for the contest. We have a lot of respect for all of the judges involved, and we're grateful to them for taking the time to judge the contest. We think they'll do a great job of finding the coolest plugins in the bunch.
  • We've received some questions that could use clarification, so we've assembled a mini-FAQ below.

Announcing Pricing & Licensing Changes to Movable Type

Over the past couple weeks, we've read and listened to user feedback and have carefully considered the criticisms and suggestions that were made. While we realized fairly quickly that adjustments needed to be made to our licensing, we decided to take our time to fully understand the problems, think about the options and analyze possible solutions. I hope at the end of this post you'll agree that the time was well spent.

We feel that what we've come up with is great for both Six Apart and our customers. We were able to create pricing that enables us to invest more in the development of Movable Type while also removing the limitations that many users felt were too restrictive. And, ultimately the new licensing is simpler to understand and more flexible in how you can use the tool.

Updates to Licensing

We wanted to give you an update since it's been about three weeks since Movable Type 3.0 Developer Edition was released. First, we're still working on revising our licenses and pricing, and we want to take our time to get it right. We've already created new pricing for educational users and we'll be posting that along with our updated personal edition pricing early this week. Those who have already purchased licenses will be receiving an email before the new pricing/licensing is officially announced.

It's also important to note, that in addition to the developer resources we're focusing on for this Developer Edition, we're planning an upcoming general release, which we're sure will have some compelling features that will be a compelling update for all users.

More for Developers

As part of the release of the Developer Edition of Movable Type, we've explained a bit more about our commitment to developers. Part of that commitment is a new developer network. The developer network is a set of resources that we at Six Apart are putting together to help you make, distribute and, if you wish, sell the cool and creative work you do on the Movable Type platform. We're trying to make your job easier and more profitable while also giving you the tools you need to do new, more advanced projects. The network also offers a community for programmers, designers, developers and consultants who offer tools or services that work with the Movable Type Publishing Platform. You don't have to be a coder; people who design templates and websites or offer consulting services are more than welcome. We'll even be helping with some new ways to reach customers and clients interested in your work. Interested? Sign up for more information. We'll be sending a qualification survey to people who register that will let you join the network, and can net you some pretty nice benefits like a developer discount good for a free commercial license of Movable Type, membership in a new official developer mailing list, a developer subscription to TypePad, and information on how you can build up your skills. It's all designed to help simplify development for those who build websites, applications, or devices that are powered by Movable Type. One more perk for developers: We're still giving away $20,000 in prizes, as part of our "Plug In to Movable Type" contest. There's an Apple G5 with a Cinema Display, copies of Adobe Creative Suite Premium with GoLive CS, a couple of 40GB iPods, and tons more prizes you could win. Get to work!
