Six Apart Launches Japanese Subsidiary; Localizes Popular Weblogging Software Tools for Japanese Market

Tokyo, Japan and San Mateo, CA- March 18, 2004-- Weblog software leader Six Apart today announced the formation of Six Apart KK, a wholly owned subsidiary formed to promote its weblogging software and services in the Japanese market. The subsidiary will maintain and expand relationships with partner companies such as NIFTY and NTT Communications, licensees of Six Apart's leading weblogging service, TypePad(tm).

"With many of the world's most innovative and leading-edge technologies being developed and deployed in Japan, we understand why Japan is early to embrace and utilize weblogs," said Mena Trott, Six Apart's CEO and co-founder. "We are forming our subsidiary in Japan so we can directly work with and serve the Japanese market. We look forward to a productive and exciting relationship with Japanese users through our new subsidiary."

Weblogs, commonly referred to as "blogs" for short, are one of the fastest growing phenomena on the web, with millions of webloggers all over the world participating in the medium by publishing their thoughts on any topic in this simple, richly linked format.

Six Apart, founded by the husband and wife team of Ben Trott and Mena G. Trott, has been a technological innovator in the weblog space since its launch of Movable Type in October 2001. The company's second and award-winning product, TypePad, offers a hosted service with powerful yet intuitive tools for creating accessible, media-rich weblogs and photo albums.

The Japanese subsidiary plans to provide a localized version of Movable Type 3.0 in April 2004. In the past, Movable Type had been released for the English language market and its Japanese volunteers had to modify it with "Japanese patches." Now Six Apart KK will create and support an official Japanese version.

"We are very excited about the Movable Type Japanese version," said Ben Trott, Six Apart's chief technology officer and co-founder. "We truly appreciate those who have supported Movable Type in the past and hope they will enjoy the convenience of the official Japanese version. Without their voluntary support, Movable Type would not have become so widely used by people all across Japan."

In addition, Six Apart KK plans to offer TypePad Japanese Edition, which will provide localized services such as a user-interface in Japanese and payment methods with Japanese currency. It will also offer TypePad ASP Services, which enables Internet service providers (ISPs) and portal sites to provide state-of-the-art weblogging solutions to their customers.

Pricing and availability will be announced for each product and service separately.

Leading the Six Apart KK is Nobuhiro Seki, Representative Director and Country Manager, who is responsible for the Japanese market. Previously, Seki was engaged in business development at Nikkei Business Publications, after serving as Staff Editor contributing to Nikkei Computer. Seki graduated from the University of Tokyo with a B.S. in Engineering and received an MBA in Entrepreneurship from Carnegie Mellon University.

Seki is joined by Daiji Hirata, Corporate Officer of Technology, who is responsible for technology localization and development. Hirata joined Six Apart from Neoteny, the lead investor in Six Apart. At Neoteny, he has evangelized weblogging in Japan. Prior to Neoteny, he worked for NTT Corporation, where he helped develop a wireless LAN system to support Internet and intranet networks. Hirata received his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering from Osaka University. Hirata serves as an outside board member for BeatCraft, Inc. and Neoteny Venture Development Co., Ltd.
